Camberwell MA08

MA Printmaking

Camberwell has a well-established tradition of printmaking as a specialist activity and is renowned for its excellence in its delivery. The diversity and interdisciplinary nature of media available within contemporary printmaking, driven by continuing rapid technological developments, invites new dialogues with the reflective practitioner and poses particular questions for the artist interested in exploring their ideas through the issues and potential of print.

Printmaking is committed to the development of the creative practitioner within a broad definition of the subject that is essentially open to challenge and individual interpretation. The programmes of study are designed to place the practice of printmaking in both a contemporary critical context and in a wide historical perspective. The acquisition and development of technical skills, critical thinking, contextual and professional knowledge are seen as interdependent elements and students are encouraged to investigate and reconsider assumptions underlying the applications of autographic processes and new technologies.

Márquez, Ruth

Ruth Márquez

My work criticises the whole “institutionalized” art system, from the overcrowded art schools to the elitist art galleries where artists transform themselves into factory workers and the artwork is mostly seen as a product of commodification. Using video animation, installation work and silkscreen printing I recreate a visual scenario that points out the deficiencies of this promised land.

Niland, Leigh Elizabeth

Leigh Elizabeth Niland

An American painter/printmaker, Niland’s work deals with themes of the human emotion of loneliness and the manifestations self-neglect. Using elements of the landscape to convey psychological states of being, the current body of work results from an eight-year fascination with the now-vanished industrial landscape of Hackney Wick.

The Safest place in the World?

The work displays the constructs of an invented space, perceived through line and organic forms. The images I create have been described as structures, habitats for someone or something! Colour is a vital element in the work, the use or of colour is used to explain the space, to capture your attention and to envisage emotions and feelings.
