MA Book Arts

The concept of the book is explored through analysis of both its form and function while its increasingly important role within interdisciplinary practice underpins the course.

As the Internet begins to free the book from its traditional cultural role as container of information, book artists are at the forefront of creating and evolving a new role and identity for the book. Students discuss the changing nature of the book with reference to both its historical context and its relationship to current professional practice. Book Arts recognises the eclectic nature of the book and encompasses production of multiples, the unique, the precious or ephemeral, installation, digital imaging, paper engineering, documentary or poetry; from what can be envisaged to what has not yet been recognised.

The book is explored in the context of contemporary art as a focus for analytical visual practice, and enables graduates to contribute to the international discourse surrounding book arts.

This art piece is a clear reflection of myself in a different world. The famous Chinese poem "Drinking alone with the moon" is applied as a main subject to explain my personal feeling in London. The whole art piece is created as a result of my research study of Chinese and Western book culture, useful book arts practice and personal experience in London.

The series of staple works are based on the life that I have experienced in London. The function of staple, which is attaching one thing to another, was used in my work to attach myself to London life.

My current practice emerged from a chance encounter with The Pigeon Fanciers Diary (1955 edition). Inspired by a passion for collecting any dog-eared book that crosses my path, my love of creating humorous and sincere narrative collage; my work leads me to explore the role of the storyteller.

My practice is inspired by my obsession of collecting words. Part of it is related to the way people read books and to what they decide to keep from them, which forms their 'collection of knowledge'. The other part looks at what can be collected under the title 'collection'.
